SOME IDEAS FOR DESIGN OF YOUR OWN CLOTHES AND FOR USE OF CLOTHES OF YOUR OWN DESIGN

There are many good reasons for designing your own clothes. One reason is simply that you think clothes of a special style are beautiful, but you cannot find this style in the shops, or the clothes of that style that you find in the stores are simply not good enough. Then you can use your own fantacy and make a drawing with exactly those patterns, those colors and those figures that you like, and get the clothes made for you according to your drawings.

Do you want to look sexy, or cute and attract other persons that you are interested in? Special colour combinations and symbolic figures can waken the interest of other persons in you. You can also make clothes that attract the vision of other persons to special areas of your body that you wish them to look at.

Another reaon is that you want to show your identity, your personality, your emotional properties or your intellect for other persons. Or perhaps you want to hide some aspects of your personality and exhibit others? By showing color patterns, meaningful pictures, humoristic frases or philosophical texts on your clothes, you can give other people exactly that impression of yourself that you aim at.

You can use the design of your clothes to show other people that you belong to a special group, for example a sport club, a political organisation, as special professional group or a congregation of any kind. A good idea could be to design clothes for a whole club that you can use when you come together or go out among people as a whole troop.

ABOUT FIBRES USED IN CLOTHES

Generally about fibres and fabric

Clothes are usually made from fabric  woven or knitted from threads. The threads are again composed of thinner fibres spun togethether. This kind of composition makes clothes penetrable to air and makes it possible for humidity to escape form the inside to the outside. The structure also make the fabric elastic to some extend and flexible so that it conform well to the shape of the body.

The fibres are of generally three kinds. One kind are fibres from plants, These are eiter fibres found in the stalk or hairs surrounding seeds of the plants. Plan fibres are chemically mostly composed of polysccarides, that are suger-like unites linked together to long molecules, and the most usual of these found in plant fibres is cellose.

The other kind of fibres is hair or threads from animals or made by animals. These are chemically mostly composed of proteins, that is long molecules made up of amino acid units linked together.

The third kind is synthetic fibres. Synthetic fibres is chemically the same as plastic formed as thin fibres. Plastic and synthetic fibres consist of long molecules made up of smaller repeating units of various kind.

In clothes different kind of fibres are often used together to give the clothes the wanted properties.

It is also posible to cast fabric from several kind of plastic and rubbers. Those kinds of fabric is however only used for special purposes, for example for rain-wear.

Cotton

Cotton is fine hairs growing around the seeds of plants of the group Dossypium. These hairs has the purpose of spreading the seeds by wind. These plants are small shroubs an the seeds with the cotton can be harvested by hand or by mahines. These shrubs grow in many tropical and subtropical countries, but most cotton produces today is from the American dpecies Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium barbadense.

The hairs consist mainly of the compound cellulose, a polymer consisting of sugar units. Before use, the hairs are freed from the seeds an spun to threads. Fabric made of cotton is soft and has a high capasity of absorbing water. Cotton is often blended with other kinds of fibres, either by using other types of fibers in the thread or by making fabric where cotton fibres are inter woven with yhreads of othe composition. Cotton is veruy often combined with poluester or rayon.

One applies cotton in many types of clothes, for example: Terrycloth, highly water absorbent bath towels and robes; denim, jeans often made of demin; chambray, wirk shirts made of chambray (blue-collar), corduroy, seersucker, and cotton twill., socks, underwear, T-shirts, bed sheets, Socks, underwear, and most T-shirts, bed sheets,  yarn used in crochet and knitting.

Fabric can also be made from recycled or recovered cotton that would otherwise be thrown away during the spinning, weaving or cutting process. While many fabrics are made completely of cotton, some materials blend cotton with other fibers, including rayon and synthetic fibers such as polyester.

One has made fine lightweighted garments of cotton cloth in areas with tropical climates for millennia. Evidence has been found of cotton in Mexican caves (cotton cloth and fragments of bloody fibre interwoven with feathers and fur) dating back approximately 7,000 years. There is clear archaeological evidence that people in India and South America domesticated different species of cotton independently thousands of years ago. In the old world India was the pioneer of cotton cultivation, then the cultivation spread to the near east and from there to Eorope.

 

POLYESTER

Polyester consists of long polymer molecules where identical units  are bound together with ester bindings, -O-C=O, or two kinds of units alternate, bound together with these bindings. Polyester can be made as thin fibres or threads or casted to compact forms.

Such polymers can be made by letting molecules having carboxylic groups, -C=O-OH and hydrroxylic groups, -OH react by releasing of water, so-called condensation polymers.

Polyester can lso be made by letting molecules having the group, -C=O-O-CH3 and the hydrroxylic group, -OH react by releasing of alcohol. This is called alcoholic transesterification.

There are many variants of polyester, simce many basic compounds have the ability to react into polymers by formation of ester bounds.

By letting the reactive material be pressed through tiny pores during the reaction, fibers will can be made, and these can the be spun into composed threads.

Polyester fabric is strong, compact,  fairly inelastic and without capsity of absorbing water.

Pure polyester is much used in outer clothes or protecting clothes where these properties are important. Pure or nearly pure polyester is often used in fabrics of home furnishings, bedspreads, curtains and draperies. Polyester fibrills are often used as stuff in pillows, comforters and cushion padding.

Polyester is often spun together with softer types of fibres, to make combined fabrics that are fairly soft, but yet have some of the strength and rigidity of polyester.

Compact casted polyester is used in many products, like bottles, films, tarpaulin, liquid crystal displays, holograms, filters, dielectric film for capacitors, film insulation for wire and insulating tapes.

Spandex (Elastan or lycra)

Spandex is called by various names by different manufacturers, such as Lycra. Elastan, Elaspan,, Dorlastan abd Linel.

Spandex is a synthetic polymer with very elastic properties. It is stronger and more durable than rubber. The molecules of spandex are polymers made of two kinds of units. These units are themselves smaller polymers, One type of unit, is polyethylene glycol that  folds itsekf up when stretch is not applied. The other type of unit, polyuretane,  is rigid. By varying the amount of these unit types, the degree of elsticity can be controlled.

Threds or yarns made of spandex can be compact or woven from many fibers.

It was invented  invented in 1959 by DuPont chemist Joseph Shivers.

Spandex is very much used in lingerie, thight shirts, socks and other clothes that are expected to sit thight to the body, to form themselves after the body, and also be pleasant to wear.

Wool

Wool is hairs of animals in the family Caprinae, most often sheep. These hair have overlapping scales along their lengths and they are crimped. These properties give the hair ability to stick together and make it possible to spin yarn from the hairs.

Wool consist mostly of protein molecules, mainy the protein keratine (hair stuff). But some absorbed and trapped water and fat (lanoline) are also present in the fibres. There is also  a lot of air-filled space between these molecules and between the hairs in yarn of wool.

Before wool is used, it is cleaned, and more or less of the fat in the wool is washed out, but some of it is left inside.

Wool  is soft, lightweighted and isolates well against cold temperature. Wool can absorb much water before it is felt as wet.

There are many qualities of wool, depending on the thickness of the hairs, how much they are cromped and other factors. Thin hairs that are heavily crimped can be used to make very fine clothes. Coarser grades however, gives stronger clothes.

The finer grades of wool are mostly used for garments, while the coarser grades are used for outer wear.

Wool before washing, rinsing and spinning, long and short hair types
