TYPES OF AIRSOFT GUNS - The driving force and action mechanism of airsoft weapons
Airsoft guns can be based on several energy sources and driving principles and are classified according to the energy source and driving mechanism:
Automatic Electric Guns (AEG): The shooting mechanism gets energy from a battery that has been charged through a battery charger. After each shot, the battery drives an electric motor. The rotating action of the motor is transformed to backward action of a piston through a series of gears. At the backside of the piston, there is a spring that is compressed by the backward action and thus stores the energy from the motor. When the spring is fully compressed, it is locked. By the shooting, the spring is released, the piston is now pressed foreward and the piston throws the bullet out.
AEGs can be shoot one bullet at a time or ot can operate in a mode where bullets are shot in a series, but the serial operation is not very fast.
AEGs are usually powered by nickel cadmium (NiCad) or nickel metal hydride (NiMH) of varying voltage. The most common battery is an 8.4 V large battery (usually about 2400 mA•h.) Also available are 8.4 V "mini" batteries, which generally have 600 mA•h capacities. Also used are big batteries of the voltage range 7.2 V to 12 V. The higher output of current measured in mAh, the longer the battery lasts while the higher voltage, the higher eate of fire or bullet velicity.
Hybrid Airsoft Guns: These are basically ordinary AEGs with an added feature. Every bullet is encosed in a plastic casing resambling that of an ordinary gun. They also have a small red explosive cap. When theu are fired, the cap expålodes and makes a realistic noise and the casing is thrown out like in real firearms.
Low Powered Airsoft Guns (LPEG): These are cheap AEGs with a weak shooting mechanism. They are often replicas of real firearms.
Mini elecrics: These are small sized electric guns that are not designed as a replica of another gun. They have a small ammunition case, but good range and mechanical functionality.
Electric Blow Backs (EBB):
Electric Blow Backs, or EBBs, are cheap electric guns, mostly designed after
real world pistols, usually powered by four AA batteries or AAA batteries. EBBs
generally have a very low muzzle velocity and a slade blowing back like a Gas
Blow Back to simulate the action of a real pistol.
Automatic Electric Pistols (AEP): These are automatic electric handguns made as replicas of real life handguns. They have generally low bullet velocity due to the small battery size, but have good hop-up functions. They do not have a back-acting slide to simulate real arms.
Spring Airsoft Guns: In this type, there is a piston with a spring at the backside. Before a shot, the piston is manually pressed backwards, the spring is thereby compressed and the piston locked when the spring is at the bottom. When a shot is fired, the piston is released and the spring presses it foreward. The piston than ejects the bullet in front of it. The spring is cocked back by means of a pumping slide or with a handle at the top of the gun.
Spring airsoft guns are cheap and solid, and they need no expansive energy source. A drawback is that they must be manually recharged after each shot, and that they tend to be somewhat imprecise. A spring aisoft gun can therefore not be made to shoot a series of shots.
Gas Airsoft Guns: Here pressurized gas from a cylinder is released . The gas presses on a piston that again shoots the bullet out. The gun is loaded by changing the gas cylinder. A gas airsoft gun can be made to shoot one bulllet at a time or many bullets at a time with good frequency.
The most common gases used are "green gas" (which consists of a mixture of propane and a polysiloxane lubricant) and HFC-134a. A less commonly used gas is "red gas" (which is actually HCFC-22). Red gas is usually avoided unless the airsoft gun has undergone modification, because its relatively high critical pressure can cause damage to the airsoft gun. CO2, nitrogen, and high pressure air are less common because they need to be stored at higher pressures than "green gas" or HFC-134a.
Gas airsoft guns can be made very compact, and it is possible to provide this type of gun with a drawback feature (authomatic reloading mechanism) that operates as swiftly as by a real gun. It is also possiblle to regulate the firing power with this type of gun. Gas airsoft guns are therefore prefered what one wishes a replica that works as like the original real life gun as posible. Pistols, submachine gun airsoft replicas and sniper rifle airsoft replicas commonly use gas mechanisms.
A drawback of gas airsoft guns is the cooling effect occuring when the gun is fired. When gas expands it takes away heat from itself and the surroundings. The cooling can make the propellant freeze or affect the function of the gun mechanics, or even cause damage to the mechanics.
Classic airsoft guns: These are the earliest type of gas airsoft guns. They can run on an internal airsoft gas tank or an external CO2-tank. These can be used more powerfully than more modern gas airsoft guns, but are usually set to a lower power.
Instead of relying on muzzle velocity for range and accuracy, they employ a special hop-up called a LRB. The LRB turns the entire barrel into a hop-up system, so the pellet can travel much farther without high muzzle energy. They also have a higher rate of fire because a spring doesn't need to be pulled back each time a shot must be fired.
