SOME DEFINITIONS ABOUT TRANSMITTERS AND RESCEIVERS
Amplitude modulation (AM)
This is a method of encoding signals between a transmitting unit and a resceiving unit where the amplitude of a carrier wave is modulated according to the information transmitted. By analogous information, the amplitude is changed proportional to changes in the transmitted information.
By digital information, the amplitude is modulated in discrete steps for each time unit.
Frequency modulation: (FM)
This is a method of encoding signals between a transmitting unit and a resceiving unit where the frequency of a carrier wave is modulated up an down form a ground frquency according to the information transmitted. By analogous information, the frequency is changed proportional to changes in the transmitted information.
By digital information, the requency is modulated in discrete steps for each time unit.
Frequency modulations are divided in two types. In narrowband modulation, the deviation from the average carrier frequency is kept small at both sides. In broadband modulation a greater deviation from the modulation is allowed. Broadband modulation is capeable of transmitting more information and is more robust against disturbances than narowband modulation.
As a whole frequency modulation is more robust against disturbances and against fading than amplitude modulation. FM techiques are therefore generally used in high fidelity equipment.
